Another wordpress blogger, michelenewsandviews.wordpress.com/, recommended the book, Techniques of the Selling Writer, a large chunk of which can be found in my Google Library @ books.google.com/books?uid=2717977123287986936. In it, the author, Dwight V. Swain, breaks down the parts of a scene: Goal, Confilct, Disaster. To summarize, the protagonist of each scene should have a specific goal that is either clearly defined at the beginning of the scene, or develops and becomes clearly defined as a result of conflict within the scene. Either way, as a result of the conflict(s), the scene should end in disaster for the protag. This is the hook that makes the reader want to read the next scene.
