Dialog tags (he said/he asked/she replied, etc.) are usually needed only when there is no other way to identify the speaker, and can be distracting. Instead of using a tag, build your world or set your scene. Examples, good and bad (I'll let you determine which is which ): Example 1 "Look!" Tawni enthused. She pointed to an ice-hawk flying overhead. Example 2 Tawni paused on the mountain trail to catch her breath and shift her backpack to a more comfortable position. She tilted her face to the snow-covered peak of the summit, a half-day's hike ahead of them. An updraft ruffled her hair and her nose tingled with scent of pine needles crushed by their shearling boots. An ice-hawk soared from its nest amid the crags, riding the winds. Smiling, she turned to Tona, trudging up the trail behind her, and pointed to it. "Look."
